Helps regulate sleep patterns, helps short term memory. Helps to maintain prostate health and prevent prostate cancer from developing. See the human trial of green tea mentioned in my book.
A group of men with PIN who normally have a 30% chance of developing prostate cancer within one year. The ones taking this supplement had a reduced incidence of getting prostate cancer within one year of just 3%.
In the study entitled "Chemoprevention of human prostate cancer by oral administration of green tea catechins in volunteers with high-grade prostate intraepithelial neoplasia: a preliminary report from a one-year proof-of-principle study." first published in Cancer research 2006, January 15; 66(2):1234-40, the men selected all had precancerous cells in their prostate. It is known that men with precancerous cells generally develop full-blown prostate cancer within a few years.
What this study showed was that those men treated with green tea extract had a dramatically lower incidence of developing full-blown prostate cancer.
I extrapolated that even in a healthy man where precancerous cells were not detected, green tea extract would have a preventative effect and help to maintain a healthy prostate. In fact, it is known as a result of post-mortem autopsies that virtually all men above the age of 70 have some prostate cancer cells.
In my view, any man above the age of 50, would be advised to take Rejuvenayte and ideally at least Total Health for the prostate as well. I personally take both, as well as additional supplements.
Below is a concise abstract of the original research that I mentioned above.
Green tea catechins (GTCs) proved to be effective in inhibiting cancer growth in several experimental models. Recent studies showed that 30% of men with high-grade prostate intraepithelial neoplasia (HG-PIN) would develop prostate cancer (CaP) within 1 year after repeated biopsy.
This prompted us to do a proof-of-principle clinical trial to assess the safety and efficacy of GTCs for the chemoprevention of CaP in HG-PIN volunteers. Sixty volunteers with HG-PIN, who were made aware of the study details, agreed to sign an informed consent form and were enrolled in this double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Daily treatment consisted of three GTCs capsules, 200 mg each (total 600 mg/d).
After 1 year, only one tumor was diagnosed among the 30 GTCs-treated men (incidence, approximately 3%), whereas nine cancers were found among the 30 placebo-treated men (incidence, 30%).
Total prostate-specific antigen did not change significantly between the two arms, but GTCs-treated men showed values constantly lower with respect to placebo-treated ones. International Prostate Symptom Score and quality of life scores of GTCs-treated men with coexistent benign prostate hyperplasia improved, reaching statistical significance in the case of International Prostate Symptom Scores. No significant side effects or adverse effects were documented.
To our knowledge, this is the first study showing that GTCs are safe and very effective for treating premalignant lesions before CaP develops.
As a secondary observation, administration of GTCs also reduced lower urinary tract symptoms, suggesting that these compounds might also be of help for treating the symptoms of benign prostate hyperplasia.
A follow-up study: "Chemoprevention of Human Prostate Cancer by Green Tea Catechins" published in European Urology in 2008 wanted to test whether the cancer progression was simply delayed in the early stages, or whether it was definitively reduced long-term. The study showed that the long-term prevention from taking green
tea extract continued to improve.
I reproduce the graph produced by that study, which illustrates the continued prevention of prostate cancer as a result of taking green tea extract.
