Do you go to the restroom more than often? Do you often dash when it’s “time to go”? Or do you find it difficult to urinate? Chances are, you have an enlarged prostate. You also may be looking for some natural remedies to solve your problem.

You’re not alone. According to the Urology Care Foundation, about 50 percent of men have an enlarged prostate when they turn 50.

An enlarged prostate poses many problems. It blocks the urethra, so urine from the bladder cannot pass through. Your doctor might recommend surgery to treat this. But a lot of us are scared of this, and surgery comes with many complications. That’s why I’ve always advised against it.

The good news is that by taking the right approach, you can naturally reduce the size of your prostate. More often it’s as simple as the food you do and don’t eat. So here is a list of 7 natural remedies you should include in your diet. All of which have a positive and healthy effect on the size of your prostate.

1) Pygeum

Pygeum has been used traditionally for urinary problems. It comes from the bark of the African plum tree. Currently, it is being used extensively in Europe. Researchers believe that pygeum helps the prostate in three ways. First, it directly reduces the inflammation of the prostate. Second, it suppresses prostate growth factors. And third, it reduces prolactin levels and decreases the uptake of testosterone.

natural remedies

A multi-center study in Germany claims that pygeum improves urine flow. It decreases residual urine volume, urine flow rate and increases voided volume. It decreases nighttime urinations, and improves bladder elasticity and prostate secretions. In short, it restores normal urination and prostate function.

2) Rye Grass Pollen Extract

The rye grass pollen extract is an emerging natural treatment for prostate enlargement. It is derived from three types of pollen is used for prostate diseases in Western Europe and East Asia. Two studies explored the effects of rye grass pollen extract. They found that the grass pollen improved symptoms of prostate enlargement. These include frequency of nighttime urination and the amount of urine left in the bladder.

natural remedies

Another meta-analysis of 444 men showed that rye grass pollen extract significantly improved self-rated urinary symptoms in men with enlarged prostates. One study also showed that rye grass pollen extract decreased the size of the prostate when seen in an ultrasound.

3) Saw Palmetto

The extract of saw palmetto has been used for centuries in relieving symptoms of prostate enlargement. It is derived from a fan-shaped plant that is native to North America. Experts consider saw palmetto as a gold standard for herbal prostate treatments.

natural remedies

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has compiled numerous studies that support the benefits of saw palmetto. Experts agree that saw palmetto contain fatty acids, flavonoids and beta-sitosterol that decrease prostate inflammation. Saw palmetto also alters certain hormone levels that affect prostate size. And unlike other medications, saw palmetto doesn’t change normal prostate-specific androgen levels.

How much saw palmetto should you take? Experts recommend a daily intake of 320 milligrams of saw palmetto split into two doses. It may take 4 to 6 weeks for you to feel its effects.

4) Avocados

Avocados are a great natural remedy for an enlarged prostate. Why? Because they’re rich in beta-sitosterol. This is a cholesterol-like substance that combats inflammation, causing your prostate to shrink. This substance increases lymphocytes and enhances the effect of natural killer cells.

natural remedies

Several studies support the anti-inflammatory substances in avocados. A double-blind trial of 519 men who took beta-sitosterol preparations showed improved urine flow. Another systematic review claims that avocados contain bioactive carotenoids. These substances act with beta-sitosterol to fight cancer cells which enlarge the prostate.

Eat avocados on a regular basis. This nutrient-rich superfood improves urine flow and can boost your immune system.

5) Stinging Nettles

Stinging nettle leaves may cause sharp, intense pain, but its extract has benefits for the prostate. Like saw palmetto, stinging needle is rich in fatty acids and sterols that decrease inflammation and swelling of the prostate.

natural remedies

One study found that stinging nettle relieves urinary symptoms of prostate enlargement. It helps by improving the flow of urine and decreasing residual urine volume. It is a natural diuretic.

You can have stinging needle as a drink. Add 1 teaspoon of dried leaves in hot water. Let it stay for 10 minutes, then strain. Drink this tea mix 2 to 3 times daily.

6) Zinc

This essential mineral helps boost our immune response and cell growth. Zinc supplements are proven to protect the prostate gland and suppress inflammation and enlargement.

natural remedies

Experts agree that we should take about 90 mg of zinc daily.

You can also eat foods rich in zinc. This includes seafood, fortified cereals and cashews.

7) Boron

Strong evidence has shown that boron may play an important role in protecting men from prostate cancer. This powerful, yet often overlooked mineral has been proven to reduce prostate cancer risk as well as lowering PSA levels. In one study reviewed the dietary intake of boron in 95 cancer patients. The results found that men with the highest boron intake showed a 54% lower risk of prostate cancer, compared to those with the lowest intake.

natural remedies

It was also noted that a higher intake of boron was associated with a decreased risk of prostate cancer. Adequate levels of boron have been associated with a 64% reduced risk of prostate cancer, however, obtaining boron from food sources is difficult, with very low levels of boron being found in food.

Don’t resign yourself to living with an enlarged prostate.

There are natural remedies for it. Along with these, you should have a healthy diet and decrease your consumption of red meat and processed foods. These will increase your hormone levels and decrease the effect of natural remedies.

Surgery is not always the option. As a natural approach can heal your enlarged prostate…

5 Best Natural Alternatives To Flomax

  1. Steven

I started your Total Health about a year ago when I found my PSA was around 8 and was increasing and got up to 12. I was having issues of having to rush to the bathroom when I needed to urinate. Using Total Health got my PSA down to 10 so I stopped when I finished the supply as a test and just tried adjusting my diet. My last PSA is up to 14, so I have ordered Total Health again. My last visit to the urologist think I have a small cancer, but I have not allow a biopsy or Flomax use. I do not have any urination problems when I am on your Total Health, but what else to you recommend for prostate cancer.

    Hello Ben
I was diagnosed with prostate cancer some 13 years ago with a Gleeson level of 6. My PSA Count has been rising quite regularly in the past 2 years the last time of testing 6 months ago it was 41. I do need to urinate pretty regularly during the day, but very rarely need to do so through the night. The first need to urinate in rising takes more time than the rest of the day where it isn’t to bad.
I am about to order your 7 natural remedies.
I do like my small glass of red wine, can you advise if this is unwise?
I have a pretty healthy way of livjng, playing tennis regularly and walking my daughters dog twice a day.
I eat well, plenty of veg/salad/fruit and where possible organic, and don’t eat red meat, but do eat chicken and lots of Alaskan or Pacific wild salmon.
I am 80 years old and feel good in general health terms, but would love to improve the prostate issue.
I look forward to hearing from you and receiving my order soon.

  6. Roy Sienes

Hi Ben. This is Roy and 58 years old. I have been diagnosed with Fybroglandular Hyperplasia with Chronic Prostatitis 2 months ago (after a biopsy, bad experience). My PSA was at 5.8 and proatate enlarged to 87.8 cc. I was given Tansulosin and Finasteride for maintenance plus 28 days of antibiotics. I am not feeling comfortable with Tamsulosin due to the indicated side effect of insomnia and depression (among others). I am very thankful I came across your column of correspondence with people with prostate issues. I am seriously considering using natural cures if possible. Please advise your recommendation and what are your comments on my medications?

My PSA’s are low, I’m experiencing a recurrence after radiation treatments, but taking the supplements with the exception, I wasn’t hep about zinc being a possible good supplement.

    • Ben Ong

      Hi Steve,

A low PSA score is a good indicator, but bear in mind that it can fluctuate as a result of drugs, surgical treatments and other factors. The important thing is to focus on a lifestyle that improves your prostate health. Once the impact of the other factors have worn off, that’s what stays and keeps your prostate healthy.

      I wish you good health,

Ben, I have been studying about curcumin supplements.
What are your thoughts on this?

        • Ben Ong

          Hello Richard,

There are a number of health benefits associated with curcumin.

It is an anti-oxidant and an anti-inflammatory. Curcumin has been shown to fight against cancer cells in laboratory studies. However, despite these great benefits, you should also be aware that curcumin alone is poorly absorbed and it is important to take it with black pepper because it contains peperine or with cyclodextrin as these compounds help curcumin be absorbed.

Let me know if you have other questions, I’m glad to help.

          Wishing you good health,

    • Ben Ong

      Hi Bill,

In regards to your query almost all of the nutrients within this article are within my Total Health supplements and Total Health Advanced. However, when it comes to pumpkin seeds and avocado they are not in my supplements. While I include highly bioavailable natural forms of their active component nutrients, I do not formulate with foodstuffs. This is because it results in a lot less of the valuable nutrients and a lot of unnecessary extras such as the fibrous material you get when you grind up pumpkin seeds. When it goes to pumpkin seeds, you will find the zinc, vitamin E and selenium that make it beneficial in Total Health and Total Health Advanced.

In addition, rather than grind up pumpkin seeds into my supplements I always simply recommend that you just eat some pumpkin seeds, they are a healthy and pleasant snack.

Also with the nutrients: Rye Grass Pollen extract and Saw Palmetto these are not within Total Health or Total Health Advanced. However I did include these ingredients within Prostate Power as an all-natural nocturia symptom alleviator.

      I wish you good health,

      Ben Ong.

  13. John Turner

I am taking BEN’S total health for the prostate and have been just short of one month. I have been taking Tamsulosin and Finasteride for 3 years now. I never wanted to take them but my prostate totally cut off my urine flow an and I had to ware a catheter until the meds worked. I want to stop taking the drugs. When can I stop taking them and rely only on BEN’S Total Health for the Prostate? I now only eat organic fruits and veges.

    • Ben Ong

      Hi John,

Really pleased to hear about your progress. Regarding weaning yourself off drugs, it is never good to stop a drug abruptly, particularly if you have been taking it for some time. It can kick back at you. You should make the changes to your diet and take Total Health with the drugs for one month and gradually come off it by taking it down from once a day to once every two days for a week. Then, reduce taking it again to once every three days for another nine days and if all is well, you can stop taking the drugs completely.

      I wish you good health,

  14. Rolly Mojica

Is there a supplement with all the 7 remedies. At present i am taking Saw palmetto, beta sitosterol and eating avocados. I am from the Philippine but from time to time I visited Seattle, Wa., USA

    • Ben Ong

      Hi Rolly,

If you were to take Total Health, Prostate Power and Prostate Healer all together, you would have more than the seven remedies. Everything I formulate is designed to improve the health of your prostate and reduce the symptoms associated with BPH.

If you want to design a plan for your treatment, just email us – it’s [email protected] and we can go into a bit more detail.

      I wish you good health,

  15. Dixon Conn

Hi Ben, If experts recommend 90mg of zinc, why does Total Health have only 15mg?

    • Ben Ong

      Hi Dixon,

Zinc is common in many of the foods you eat, almost all vegetables, grains or cereals. In addition, it is present in seafood and chicken in high quantities – so as you probably eat a food rich in zinc. Our logic was that it would be a waste to provide too much of it in Total Health, as it would simply increase the price and give you more of a mineral you are already getting adequate amounts of anyway. The Zinc I did include is chelated with amino acids to improve bio-availability making it more potent than other Zincs you will find in cheaper supplements.

      I wish you good health,

  16. sam villyard

Can you help me with liver issues for my wife?

    • Ben Ong

      Hi Sam,

      I wish you good health,

  17. Barrie Macmillan

    Hi Ben,
I discovered 9 years ago I had a prostate problem via frequent nigthtly urination at 63yo. My PSA was 16 and I was told my Gleason was 6.2. Since then I had 2 biopsies years ago. First one okay but second one…6 days after I had a major rectal bleed at night. No general surgeon on in our local large hospital until 6 hours later he turned up and sewed a large blue pad into the anal area. On discharge the papers said I had had 6 units of blood. The older urologist I was seeing conveniently got rid of his younger operating urologist who went into the public system never to be seen by me again! Over the last 6 years my PSA has gradually reduced to 7 but the local hospital public urologists keep insisting I have another operation where they insert something down my penis and “clean things out”. I have refused this for 2 years as I am not having an op down there again. What do I tell them now as they virtually insist I have this op every time I go to see them 6 monthly….. I just refuse….. full stop. I tell them if a previous op down there nearly led to their death…what would they do….they have no answer usually. My current PSA is showing 6.5 and I am peeing frequently day and night with little control and have to wear thick incontinence pads all the time to alleviate the peeing down my trousers. I am still active in community work and very busy 7 days a week helping people. I am retired and nearly 72yo. My wife thinks I should have this latest op but they will not guarantee anything re my frequency if I have it.
    What is your advice please?
My prostate was a large grapefruit size 8 years ago (4.5″ diameter) and via strong meds 6 years ago ( horse size pills where you can’t have sex without a condom because of blood in one’s semen) has become the size of an apple now (3.5″).
I have a good regime of decent food and never have anything considered bad. My weight is high due to fluid in my legs as I have contracted something called Chronic Veinous Instability which has no known cure. I get a virus under my skin which makes my skin peel, get very hard and itchy and dark red and my toenails are rotting badly The size of my lower legs/calves in last 4 years has doubled and that is where a lot of my weight is coming from. I find it difficult to exercise or walk any distance as my legs weigh a tonne and I simply have to rest as I cannot go on!
Please give your best advice. Thank you.

    • Ben Ong

      Hi Barrie,

I’m very sorry for the difficulties you’ve been facing. Regarding the Gleason, I would advise you that a Gleason score of 6.2 is low enough to probably not be a matter of concern. However, on the other matters, I think we could be of help. Rather than have this discussion on a public forum, do you want to send this to my team – [email protected]? We’ll have a think and see what we can do – it does sound like this has been going on for a while, but we’ll do our best.

      I wish you good health,

In regards to your query the answer is yes, we offer a full refund for any unused items you return.

      I wish you good health,

      Ben Ong.

  20. Greg Nichols

Hi Ben. My name is Greg. My Dr. gave me some pills for my prostate which he thinks is inflamed. On the bottle it reads SMZ/TMP DS 800-160 TABS. your thougth on this please. Greg. p.s. I odered your prostate healer.

    • greg nichols

never got a reply from ben why ? lets try it agin , what is SMZ/TMP DS 800-160 TABS . your thought please.

      • greg nichols

STILL WAITING . Greg Nichols, what is smz/tmp ds 800-160 tabs your thought.

    • Ben Ong

      Hi Greg,

I apologize for my late response; I didn’t actually see your comment till just now. In terms of the medication SMZ-TMP DS tablet it is a combination of two antibiotics: sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, these are commonly used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. This means your doctor probably suspects that you have a prostate infection, probably Prostatitis. There are a number of issues with conventional medicines for Prostatitis, but the long and the short of it is: it’s not a good solution and rarely results in a permanent cure.

      Additionally, you may want to know that the more common side effects of these medications are;

      – nausea
      – vomiting
      – diarrhea
      – loss of appetite.

      Additionally, there are a few severe side effects that can occur but are less common, such as;

      – muscle weakness
      – changes in mental health (mood swings)
      – kidney problems
      – extreme drowsiness
      – low blood sugar.

I can see that you have ordered my Prostate Healer tincture which is excellent because I specifically designed it to tackle Prostatitis. It has a proven track record of permanently clearing out prostate infections. It is also important to have a healthy diet and exercise regime to follow in order for long-term results. There is loads of information on healthy diets both in my book, which you already have – there is also more information on the website and in various eBooks, I have written.

      I wish you good health,

      Ben Ong.

      • Clarence Thompson

Cautious I was giving the same medication. Come to find out I was allergic to it. Spent 4 days in the hospital still have not fully recovered so be careful when taking this particular medication.
